Sophia Scholarship is pleased to announce the recipients of the Year 2007 9th Annual Scholarship Awards. This year Sophia is awarding a total of 15 scholarships to academically outstanding and financially deserving students, 8 in Engineering and 7 in Medical. Sophia is very glad to announce that 3 of the 8 Engineering and 1 of the 7 Medical Scholarships is made possible by generous contributors from India thorough Sophia India organization. It is also very gratifying to note that one of the Sophia India Scholarships is made possible by one Sophia Alumnus, Hari Prasad Krishnamoorthy, who graduated with Sophia Scholarship, is well placed and wants to contribute to Sophia. He mobilized the support of his classmates from MIT, Chennai (MITIANS) to make it possible with a commitment for the entire amount for one scholarship for 4 years. The Board and the Advisory Committee would like to thank all the donors for their generous contributions to enable us to give record 15 scholarships

Sophia is pleased to announce that effective 2007, all new scholarship awards have been increased to $2500 for engineering and $2800 for medicine, in view of the fall in value of U.S. dollars. Annual disbursements will be $700 for the first year, $600 for the next three years and for medical only $300 for the fifth year.

Advertisement calling for Scholarship was published in the Sophia Web Site and in “The Hindu” dated September 23, 2007. We received an overwhelming response of 461 applications ( Medicine 79, Engineering 382) from all over the country, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, , Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Pondicherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu Uttar Pradesh, Uttarkhand, and West Bengal. The Advisory Committee reviewed all the applications based on Merit, Financial Resource of the Parents and other eligibility criteria outlined in the application forms. The committee recommended a list of candidates for the Award. Sophia Board of Directors reviewed the Advisory Committee recommendations and unanimously approved the selection.

Sophia Board and the Advisory Committee would like to congratulate all the recipients of Year 2007 9th Annual Sophia Scholarship Awards. Sophia would also like to thank all those who applied for the scholarship and were not selected. We wish them the very Best in their educational endeavors .

All the selected Scholars have been intimated and the awards were distributed at a special Award ceremony at the Presidency Club in Chennai on March 8. The Scholarships will substantially cover tuition, boarding and lodging costs for the entire length of the Degree Program

General Report:

  • Number of Scholarships awarded to-date: 83 (15 in 2007, Graduated 42(13 in 2007).
  • Scholarships are awarded only after the funds required to meet the entire duration of college studies are raised through donations from the public. The excess of funds raised minus the scholarship amounts disbursed are held in a bank checking account and CDs. This assures the Sophia Scholars that their needs will be met to the end of their undergraduate studies provided they continue to perform well.
  • With the completion of the academic year 2006-2007 we have 17 doctors and 25 engineers who have completed their courses successfully
  • Scholarships have been awarded to Hindus (77), Christians (3) and Muslims (3) who are studying in the States of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Gujarat.

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

 

Any donor who contributes the entire cost of a student’s engineering or medical course ($2600) is entitled to name that scholarship of their choosing! The BoD may award a scholarship in memory of person(s) distinguished in service of humanity.

Malti Prasad Memorial Scholarship. The most outstanding female Sophia Scholar each year will be awarded a Certificate. This award was instituted by the Sophia BoD in honor of (late) Mrs. Malti Prasad who had served the cause of the Indian community in the San Francisco Bay area for over 25 years. Miss. Sheik Shahin Sultana and Miss. Nagamani Sunkana, Miss V.Roopa were presented this certificate for Years 2002-2003 and Year 2003-2004, 2007-2010.

V. Kalyanasundaram Memorial Scholarship. This award was donated by Dr. K. Venkateswaran and Mrs. Shyamala Venkateswaran in memory of Dr. Venkateswaran’s father. Mr. Husain Mohammad has been awarded the certificate for the Years 2003-2006.

Gangagoud Kaira Memorial Scholarship and Rukmini Kaira Memorial Scholarships were donated by Dr. Lingagoud Memula and Mrs. Kala Memula in memory of Mrs. Kala’s parents. Mr. R. Jemin Bharat and Mr. N. Hari Balaji were awarded these scholarships for the Years 2003-2006.

THE PROCESS

     

  • The Board of Directors campaign and collect funds in U.S.A for award of Scholarships. Based on the funds raised the number of scholarships to be awarded for the year are decided.
  • The Advisory Committee issues an advertisement in a reputed daily newspaper in August of each year soliciting applications from high-performing, needy students entering engineering or medical colleges. The students need to produce evidence of admission into any recognized college in India and a declaration of financial status.
  • All applicants are ranked by academic achievement (score in High School final examination). The top twelve students in each category (engineering and medicine) are evaluated against financial need based on their declarations and verification by AC as required.
  • Advisory Committee makes recommendation to the Board of Directors the names of candidates selected for award of scholarships for the year.
  • The BOD reviews and approves the awards and issues checks in annual installments directly to the students who will be known as Sophia Scholars.
  • The Advisory Committee monitors the performance of the Sophia Scholars before subsequent years’ disbursements of funds. Stating this year for the new scholars Scholarship amount is raised due to inflation and the drop in value of dollar. The previously awarded scholars will be paid at the old rate of $700 in the first year and $500 for the following 3 years, except that medical students receive an additional $300 in the final (fifth) year. These amount to a total of $2200 for engineering scholars and $2500 to the medical scholars. The new scholars will be awarded $700 in the first year and $600 for the following 3 years, except that medical students receive an additional $300 in the final (fifth) year.
